Free Tools to Evaluate Your Website

A lot of people have been asking me whether I think web to print applications should be your website or should they be a link off your website? My answer has been “depends on what the web to print vendor can do as far as websites are concerned.” If they can deliver both, its sure efficient to have a single platform, your online cash register (e-commerce) and storefront (shopping experience) on the same technology platform.

The purpose of websites has changed, it’s not about “brochure-ware” anymore – it’s mainly about (2) things:

  1. Getting Found
  2. Pull Marketing Program

If you’ve been reading this blog, listening to my podcast, attending the recent WhatTheyThink webinar, or seen me speak recently. You know that I’m a big believer in creating and publishing compelling content as part of your online business strategy. Why? Online business is about pull marketing vs. push marketing. You attract potential customers by delivering value (in the form of content) which then ushers the customer through the sales process in a self service fashion (e.g. Know Me, Like Me, Trust Me, Pay Me).

So what’s this got to do with your website? Well it changes the entire focus of your website. Your website is about online marketing and online marketing is first and foremost about “getting found” and then executing on your “pull marketing strategy.” Getting found is all about search engine optimization (SEO) and pull marketing is about publishing content.

Your website needs to be SEO optimized and setup to be a publishing platform. If you want to have one solution (web to print + website) then the web to print vendor needs to be able to deliver SEO and publishing platform (CMS, blog, social media connections, mobile, etc…).

I’m a huge fan of WordPress, not just because it’s a free publishing platform but because it has a powerful and huge group of people continuously improving on it. The WordPress platform is an excellent blog platform that can also be used as your website. SEO is constantly being improved on the WordPress platform and the publishing platform continues to be the best on the web. WordPress might be a good place to start and then plug your web to print solution into it.
